August 2009 - Notes from the President

"A woman that tries to be like a man is lacking in ambition"-this statement received great laughter from the crowd at the 6th Annual Girls, Inc. Luncheon this past week.  The speaker, Dr. Mae Jamison, was strong, smart and bold.  She is a pioneer and the first black woman in space.  Ten Mansfield Women's Division members represented our organization.  We had a great time, and I think we left very inspired from a powerful speech.  What hit me most was her stating that "we must take our experiences forward".  What if we live our life and we do not carry our events, thoughts, memories and lessons forward to other areas of our lives?  That is so profound.  Read it again and think about sharing your life and experiences with others.  Pay attention to and learn from all of the adventures you have in life.

This month the request is help and support for the Tour of Homes.  It is a reality that we are in a tough economy and perhaps a $1,000 sponsorship is out of your reach. However, please budget to purchase at least two tickets and attend the event this year.  Use this as an opportunity to thank a client, friend or family member for all they do for you.  This always goes a long way!  One of the best times and relationship building activities I ever did was when I first opened my Allstate office.  I sponsored a limo, invited 10 realtors and mortgage people and we had a blast.  Those folks are some of my greatest friends and referral sources today.  Please commit to do something toward the success of the 2009 Tour of Homes. Sponsorship, raffle items, ticket sales-we need it all!  Get with Cathy Trimble and Lisa Lambert with anything you can do-the smallest to the largest contribution is appreciated.

I look forward to seeing you at this month's luncheon, August 20, 2009 from 11:30-1:00 at the Walnut Creek Country Club.  Shama Hyder is our speaker and Heather Wickstorm promises a high energy-learning experience to help us better understand how to develop new business.  As always, try to get there a bit early, checked in and give yourself time to network and meet members.  We thank our table/sweet sponsors for August-Cabi-Barrie McCoy, Fashion and Fun Jewelry Parties-Nicole Robinson, Southwest Bank-Shirley Mimms & Dana Brooks-Alpha Omega Allied Healthcare.

Remember if it is your birthday month please bring a door prize and even if it is not your birthday then feel free to promote your business by donating something fun.

Soon we will be getting the nominating committee together for next year's officers.  If you are interested in being on the Board of Directors please let me know and I will get your name to the committee.  I can promise you it is very rewarding, and the friendships you will make are invaluable.

Time is flying by so fast and I cannot believe we are through half of the year-Things really begin to start changing around this time it seems. The foliage, kids back to school, activities galore-it all comes at us so fast that it is hard to decide what to do and not to do.  Take a deep breath, keep your perspective and remember to take time for yourself.  You are a precious asset to yourself and those around you!

Featured Member of the Month

ANN MONROE

To many of you our August featured member of the month needs no introduction. Ann Monroe. Ann has been a member of our organization for many years, and has been on the Executive Board in a variety of positions. When she is not working with her husband Mike at their COMMDEC business, you will see her volunteering somewhere around town. It does not matter if it is the Style Show, Tour of Homes, or Scholarships, wherever needed. That is where you will find Ann Monroe. Ann is also an exceptionally talented artist. She has been known to use her decorative tole painting skills to create beautiful donated raffle items for our fund-raising events.

Ann joined the Women’s Division/Foundation like many of us to give back to our community, and meet other talented women. She is very proud of what this organization has been able to achieve over the years. It is women like Ann, that have had the true dedication to see the Women’s Division Foundation through to achieve great success. Thank you Ann!
